2012 Chevrolet Sonic hatchback, road test, Catskill Mountains, Oct 2011
General Motors is recalling certain 2012 model year Chevrolet Sonic subcompact cars over concerns that a front inner or outer brake pad may be missing.
A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) site lists the potential number of affected vehicles at 4,296. Affected vehicles were manufactured from June 2, 2011 through November 21, 2011.
The NHTSA notice indicates that a missing pad would result in reduced brake performance. This condition could increase the risk of a crash.
General Motors will notify owners and dealers will inspect the front brakes of affected Sonic cars for a missing inner or outer pad. If the pad is missing, dealers will replace inner and outer pads with new ones, as well as install a new brake caliper and a new rotor. This service will be performed free of charge. The safety campaign is expected to begin on or before January 14, 2012.
The General Motors safety recall campaign number is 11354.
Alternatively, owners of vehicles involved in the campaign may contact the NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to http://www.safercar.gov. Reference the NHTSA campaign ID No. 11V599000.
