A notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lists the number of potential affected units at 195,000. Affected vehicles were manufactured from January 7, 2010 through May 20, 2011.

The NHTSA notice says that if the components in the bottom cover of the windshield wiper motor assembly overheat, the wipers may become inoperable, thus reducing driver visibility which may result in a crash. Another possible consequence is a fire.

Subaru will begin notifying owners of affected vehicles and Subaru dealers will then replace the front wiper motor bottom assembly, free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during November 2011.
