BMW is recalling certain 2009 model year X5 xDrive 35d sport utility vehicles over concerns about a potentially faulty fuel-filter heater.
A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) site lists the number of potential affected units at 2,120. Affected vehicles were manufactured from October 1, 2008 through June 12, 2009.
The NHTSA notice says that the fuel filter heater, which is used to warm up diesel fuel during low outside temperatures, could stay on, even after the vehicle is switched off. The consequences are that this condition could drain the battery or overheat and potentially cause a fire.
BMW will notify owners of affected vehicles and dealers will replace the fuel filter heater free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during October 2011.
