2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8, Dodge Charger SRT8: Recall Alert

Chrysler is conducting a voluntary safety recall of certain 2012 model year Chrysler 300 SRT8 and Dodge Charger SRT8 sedans over concerns about a potential defect involving the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) site lists the number of potential affected units at 303. Affected vehicles were manufactured from May 2, 2011 through November 17, 2011.

The NHTSA notice says that the affected vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 138, “Tire Pressure Monitoring System.” As built, the affected vehicles do not warn the driver when the tire pressure is 25 percent below the recommended pressure. Instead, the vehicles involved in the recall warn the driver when the tire pressure reaches 22 psi, rather than the required 24 psi.

Tires that are underinflated can result in tire overheating and overloading, which could potentially lead to a blowout and subsequent crash.

The issue came to light after a field report was generated on November 17, 2011 as a result of a warranty claim. Chrysler initiated an investigation and the Brampton assembly plant on that date initiated a corrective action. On December 21, 2011, Chrysler decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall on all affected vehicles. The company said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition.

The remedy to the problem is reprogramming the TPMS to the correct tire placard pressures in the central body controller. Chrysler will notify dealers and owners of affected vehicles and the repair will be performed free of charge. The Chrysler safety recall is expected to begin during February 2012.

In the meantime, owners of 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 and Dodge Charger SRT8 passenger cars with any questions or concerns may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. Reference the Chrysler safety recall number L43.

Alternatively, owners of vehicles involved in the campaign may contact the NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to http://www.safercar.gov. Reference the NHTSA campaign ID No. 12V004000.
