General Motors is conducting a voluntary safety recall of certain 2012 Cadillac CTS vehicles for a potential brake issue.
A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) site lists the potential number of affected vehicles at 674. The vehicles involved in the campaign were built from October 21, 2011 through October 26, 2011.
GM product engineers discovered the problem on August 28 and issued a stop sale on August 29 for all affected units. Once the service procedure specified by GM has been performed, affected units will be released for sale.
At issue is a condition in which the power vacuum brake boost pushrod retention nut may not have the proper torque according to specification. Lacking the proper torque, the nut could loosen, allowing the separation of the pushrod from the brake pedal. This could result in the loss of braking ability, which could then lead to a crash without prior warning.
Cadillac notified owners of affected vehicles by first-class mail, instructing them to bring their car to a GM dealer for inspection and repair, if necessary. This will be performed at no charge to owners. The Cadillac safety campaign began November 1, 2011.
